Lightdash

Overview

Lightdash's defining choice is that it does not have a semantic layer of its own. The dbt project is the semantic layer: metrics and dimensions are defined in dbt YAML, and Lightdash reads them. For a team already running dbt that removes a whole category of work, and a whole category of drift between two competing definitions of a metric.

That is also the constraint. Without dbt there is nothing for Lightdash to read, so it is not a general-purpose BI tool in the way Metabase or Superset are. It supports dbt 1.4.0 and above, and documents five different ways to sync a project, which differ in where the code comes from, where compilation happens and which target governs the result.

Because definitions live in the project, lineage falls out of the design: any query can be traced back to the official definition behind it, and charts and dashboards can themselves be managed as code.

The 2026 positioning is agentic: conversational analytics for people who will not write SQL, AI agents, an MCP server, and data apps built on the same model. The pitch is that the shared understanding of the business gets richer the more the team uses it.

Pricing is the clearest departure from the category. Cloud Pro is $3,000 a month for unlimited users, stated directly against per-seat licensing, and the self-hosted open-source edition is free. That makes it unusually easy to cost for a wide readership audience, where per-seat tools get expensive precisely when a dashboard succeeds.

Lightdash develops the open-source BI tool of the same name and sells a hosted edition of it. The product is open source on GitHub and can be self-hosted at no cost, with support through a community Slack; the commercial offering is Cloud Pro at a flat monthly price and an Enterprise tier negotiated directly. The company publishes its pricing openly, including the headline number, which is uncommon among its competitors — Sigma, Omni and ThoughtSpot all route pricing enquiries to sales.
