Tableau

Visual analytics and BI platform for building interactive dashboards.

Overview

Tableau is a visual analytics platform, sold as authoring applications plus either a hosted service or a server you run yourself, and now branded as part of Salesforce.

Its architecture is a query layer over either a live connection or an in-memory extract, so unlike the model-first tools here you can start visual and add structure later.

Its licensing changed materially in July 2026 and this dates most existing guidance: readers can now be bought as capacity blocks rather than per-seat licences.

A deployment must choose one or the other, not both, which makes this a migration decision rather than an incremental option.

There are four role types rather than three, and the display role is the one most often missed when sizing a deployment.

A third model exists for external-facing work, metering usage in analytical impressions rather than people, which suits embedded and metric-digest use.

Note the embedded analytics licence is limited-use and cannot coexist with full-use licences in the same environment, so you deactivate one to use the other.

Its editions were renamed and extended, and the agentic capability arrives through a bundle rather than as a feature of the base product.

A governed semantic surface is now a named product in its own right, which is a real change for anyone who assumed Tableau had no modelling layer.

One practical research note: its marketing site blocks automated access, so pricing and version facts here come from its documentation and release pages, and the list rates are worth confirming on the live pricing page.

Key features and capabilities

The same headings are used for every bi & dashboards entry, so two tools can be read side by side.

Data modelling and semantic layer
  • A data source layer with logical relationships alongside traditional joins and blends
  • Calculated fields in its own expression language, including level-of-detail expressions
  • Extracts use an in-memory engine, or you connect live to the source
  • A separate preparation application builds flows for cleaning and shaping
  • A governed semantic surface is now its own named product rather than an implicit layer
Charts, dashboards and interactivity
  • A guided chart chooser, dual-axis and combination charts, plus story points for narrative sequences
  • Dashboards with containers and device-specific layouts
  • Cross-filtering, highlighting and drill actions are native behaviours
  • Extensions and visual extensions bring in third-party components
  • A dedicated mobile application with its own layouts
Calculations, AI and natural language
  • Its expression language covers table calculations and level-of-detail logic
  • Built-in trend lines, forecasting and clustering rather than add-ons
  • A metrics monitoring surface sends natural-language insight digests
  • Agentic analytics arrives through a bundle rather than the base product, including a chat surface
  • Data-driven alerts on thresholds
Publishing, embedding and collaboration
  • Publish to the hosted service or your own server, with subscriptions and scheduled digests
  • An embedding interface plus a separate limited-use embedded analytics licence for white-labelled use
  • That embedded licence cannot coexist with full-use licences in the same environment
  • Commenting is available down to the viewer role
  • Export to image, document, crosstab and summary data
Security, lineage and certification
  • Row-level security through user filters and entitlement tables
  • A data management add-on brings certified data sources, lineage and impact analysis
  • A catalogue service indexes assets for discovery and impact
  • Administrative insights dashboards for usage monitoring
  • A tenant manager allocates capacity across sites, which matters under the new capacity licensing
Integrations
  • A broad native connector set plus standard database interfaces and a connector toolkit
  • A data service and insight interfaces are now first-class metered surfaces
  • Published interfaces for administration, metadata and the in-memory extract format
  • Integration with the parent company's data cloud and chat platform
  • Private connectivity to your own network is a paid per-connection add-on on the higher editions
Where it runs and what it costs
  • Hosted service or a server you run yourself, including on Linux and in containers
  • Four role types, with the display role easy to miss when sizing
  • Since July 2026 readers can be licensed as capacity blocks instead of seats, but not both in one deployment
  • A usage-based model meters analytical impressions for external-facing work
  • Regions and sovereign options were not confirmed in this pass and are recorded as unpublished

Pricing

SubscriptionFrom $15 per viewer per month, billed annually

Per user by role, billed annually, with published list rates of $75 for the authoring role, $42 for the explorer role and $15 for the viewer role, and at least one authoring licence required per deployment. Since July 2026 readers can instead be bought as capacity blocks, which cap visualisation and background actions rather than counting people, but those block prices are not published. Nor are the display role rate, the impression rate for the usage-based model, the higher edition prices, server pricing or the trial length.

About Salesforce

Tableau is owned by Salesforce and its own documentation now brands it accordingly. For the financial year ended January 2026 Salesforce reported revenue of $41.5bn, up ten per cent, with an operating margin around twenty per cent and total remaining performance obligations of $72bn; none of those figures is specific to this product, and no Tableau customer count, headcount or revenue line is published separately. The acquisition itself dates from 2019 but its terms were not verified from a first-party page in this pass and are recorded as unpublished rather than restated. Note for anyone researching further that the marketing site blocks automated readers, so the documentation and release-notes sites are the practical sources.
