Snowplow

Overview

Check the licence before adopting Snowplow, because it is no longer open source in the way it was. The free edition is governed by the Snowplow Limited Use Licence Agreement, SLULA 1.1, which carries a non-commercial use restriction. Snowplow's own pricing page offers a Self-Hosted Pipeline option described as being for previous open-source users, whose stated purpose is to remove that restriction. That is the clearest possible statement that running it commercially for free is no longer the arrangement.

That aside, its distinctive property is ownership of the data. Snowplow collects behavioural events, validates them against schemas and enriches them, then delivers them into your own warehouse rather than holding them in a vendor's system. The contrast with a hosted product-analytics tool is structural: you get the atomic event stream and can model it however you like, and the vendor does not sit between you and your own behavioural data.

Validation is the part that separates it from simply logging events. Events are checked against schemas at collection, so malformed data is caught at the edge instead of discovered downstream in a model that quietly produced the wrong number.

The 2026 positioning is a customer context layer for AI: real-time behavioural context fed to agents and copilots, which Snowplow describes as avoiding black boxes and third-party dependencies — a fair claim given that the data lands in your warehouse.

Commercially it is flexible to the point of being hard to compare: rates run on monthly event volume, hosting preference, consumption, or destinations, depending on what you pick. The 14-day trial is unusually open, requiring no card and no sales call.
