Metadata Plane · Data Catalogues & Discovery

Alation

Enterprise data catalogue for search, discovery, stewardship and governance.

Overview

Alation is one of the longest-established commercial data catalogues, now presented as a wider platform it calls an intelligence operating system, with catalogue, lineage, quality, curation, data products, ontologies, analytics and agents as modules.

It ingests from more than 120 connectors, and its extraction model is worth understanding because it shapes what the catalogue knows. Metadata extraction reads schemas; query log ingestion reads what people actually ran; and Compose, its built-in SQL editor, contributes the queries analysts write in the tool itself.

Those query logs are also how lineage is built. Alation parses them to infer table and column-level transformations, so lineage reflects real usage rather than only declared pipelines. Granularity depends on the source: column level for relational databases, field level for BI tools, attribute level for file systems. Lineage can also be loaded from spreadsheets or scripts, and impact analysis shows which reports break if a source changes.

Usage signals run through the product generally: behavioural intelligence surfaces how data is really used and feeds search ranking and stewardship. Governance modules add curation workflows, a business glossary, critical data management, data quality and ontologies.

It ships in two forms, a vendor-managed cloud service and a customer-managed installation, each with its own release line; the current line is the 2026 release. Where a connector does not exist, the Open Connector Framework SDK and public REST APIs let you build one. Customers named on its site include the BBC, Cisco, Nasdaq and Japan Airlines.

Key features and capabilities

The same headings are used for every data catalogues & discovery entry, so two tools can be read side by side.

Metadata ingestion
  • More than 120 connectors across warehouses, databases, ETL, BI, applications and streaming
  • Three extraction routes: metadata extraction, query log ingestion and queries written in Compose
  • Query log ingestion configured per source, with a custom query if needed
  • Open Connector Framework for data source, BI, file system and ELT connectors
Search and discovery
  • Catalogue and marketplace modules for finding certified assets
  • Behavioural intelligence on real usage, feeding search ranking
  • Compose, a built-in SQL editor whose queries enrich the catalogue
  • Data products and critical data management for curated discovery
Lineage
  • Table-level and column-level lineage; column level depends on the source and connector
  • Granularity by source type: columns for databases, fields for BI, attributes for file systems
  • Inferred from query logs by parsing and pattern recognition
  • Manual loading from spreadsheets or scripts, plus impact analysis on downstream reports
Glossary, classification and policy
  • Curation and stewardship workflows with accountable owners
  • Business glossary, ontologies and critical data management
  • A documented data quality architecture with its own stewardship guide
  • Agentic data governance and AI governance are named solutions
Ownership and collaboration
  • Stewardship workflows assigning owners and curators
  • Alation Anywhere pushes catalogue context into the tools people already use
  • Analytics on catalogue adoption and curation progress
Integrations and APIs
  • Warehouses: Snowflake, Redshift, Databricks
  • Databases and storage: PostgreSQL, SQL Server, MongoDB, AWS Glue, S3
  • BI and applications: Tableau, Power BI, Salesforce; Confluent Kafka for streaming
  • Public REST APIs, plus the Open Connector Framework SDK for building connectors
How it runs
  • Two models: Alation Cloud Service, or customer-managed
  • Release notes versioned separately for each model; current line is the 2026 release
  • Cloud regions are not published

About Alation

Alation is a private, proprietary software company selling the catalogue platform of the same name. Its about-us page was unreachable when this profile was written, so its founding year, head office and funding are recorded here as not published from its own site rather than taken from elsewhere. What the company does publish is its delivery model, a cloud service and a customer-managed option, its extensibility route through the Open Connector Framework SDK and public APIs, and documentation versioned per release line.
