OpenMetadata

Open-source metadata platform for discovery, lineage, data quality and collaboration.

Overview

OpenMetadata is an open-source metadata platform that covers cataloguing, discovery, governance, data quality, observability and lineage in one application rather than as separate products. It is Apache 2.0 licensed and developed by Collate, which also sells a managed service.

It claims more than 130 connectors, with the documentation listing roughly 105 across databases, dashboards, pipelines, messaging, storage, search, ML models and APIs. Ingestion pipelines are set up in a few clicks and scheduled with Airflow, and a built-in profiler collects usage statistics and spots nulls and duplicates.

Search covers keyword and advanced Boolean queries, understands nested fields inside arrays and structs, and uses tier tags to rank assets by importance. Lineage spans databases, dashboards and pipelines, extends to column level, and can be extracted automatically, created through the Python SDK or edited by hand.

Governance is built in rather than bolted on: glossary, tags, tiers, ownership and role-based policies for who may change metadata, plus a testing framework for freshness, completeness and accuracy.

Collaboration is unusually strong for a catalogue. There is an activity feed, conversation threads and tasks, alerts to Slack, Teams or Google Chat, and metadata is versioned so changes can be reviewed and reverted. Version 2.0 arrived during 2026. Users named on the site include Wix, Yelp and Carrefour.

Key features and capabilities

The same headings are used for every data catalogues & discovery entry, so two tools can be read side by side.

Metadata ingestion
  • 130+ connectors claimed; the docs list around 105, most of them databases and dashboards
  • One-click ingestion pipelines, scheduled through Airflow
  • Connectors marked production or beta, with limitations documented per connector
  • Profiler collects usage statistics and flags nulls and duplicates
Search and discovery
  • Keyword search plus advanced Boolean search on metadata criteria
  • Data associations such as frequently joined tables
  • Nested fields inside arrays and structs are searchable
  • Tier tags mark importance and inform ranking
Lineage
  • Lineage across databases, dashboards and pipelines, including column level
  • Extracted automatically from warehouses and BI tools
  • Created programmatically through the Python SDK, or edited by drag and drop
  • Cross-database and cross-project lineage resolution
Glossary, classification and policy
  • Business glossary, descriptions and tags on tables, columns and other assets
  • Tiers for importance and ownership for accountability
  • Role-based policies controlling who may change metadata
  • Testing framework for completeness, freshness and accuracy
Ownership and collaboration
  • Activity feed across all data, owned assets or followed items
  • Conversation threads and tasks on assets
  • Alerts by webhook, Slack, Microsoft Teams or Google Chat
  • Metadata versioning, so changes can be reviewed and reverted
Integrations and APIs
  • Warehouses and databases: Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift, Databricks, Oracle, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, SAP HANA
  • BI: Tableau, Power BI, Looker, Metabase, Superset, Grafana, QuickSight
  • Pipelines: Airflow, dbt Cloud, Dagster, Fivetran, Airbyte, Prefect, NiFi
  • Catalogue-to-catalogue connectors for Alation, Amundsen and Apache Atlas
How it runs
  • Self-hosted on Kubernetes with Helm charts, on EKS, AKS, GKE or on-premises
  • Bare-metal installation without Kubernetes, or Docker for development
  • Hosted sandbox for evaluation, and a managed service from Collate

Pricing

Open source

The project is free under the Apache 2.0 licence. Collate's managed service publishes named tiers, Free, Premium and Enterprise plus an AI add-on, with feature and user limits per tier, but no prices: every paid tier leads to a demo. The free tier is self-service.

About Collate

OpenMetadata is developed by Collate, Inc., which owns the trademark and sells the managed service. It was co-founded by Suresh Srinivas, previously a co-founder of Hortonworks and chief architect for data at Uber, and Sriharsha Chintalapani, a Kafka and Storm committer who was previously an architect at Uber and Hortonworks. The company does not publish its founding year, head office or funding. The project itself is Apache 2.0 licensed and company-stewarded rather than hosted by a foundation.
