Overview

Atlan is a commercial, cloud-only metadata platform. It began as a data catalogue and now presents itself as a context layer for AI: the same metadata that helps people find and trust data is also served to AI tools and agents so they act on the right definitions.

Metadata comes from more than 80 connectors covering warehouses, BI tools and the wider estate. Search is the part people notice first: alongside filters for source, owner, certification and tags, you can ask questions in plain language and get answers from the catalogue.

Lineage runs to column level and is generated in two documented ways: from query history, and by matching asset names across systems. Impact analysis and root-cause analysis are built on it, and metadata such as classifications can be propagated along the graph automatically.

Governance centres on the business glossary, which standardises terminology and grounds AI in what each term means, with bulk upload and linking of terms to assets. Ownership and certification are first-class and filterable.

It is delivered as SaaS, with Slack, Teams, Jira and ServiceNow integrations, identity through Okta or Entra ID, APIs and webhooks, and an MCP server for exposing context to AI tools. Self-hosting, private cloud options and the regions it runs in are not published. Customers named on its site include Mastercard, HubSpot, Unilever, General Motors and the NHS.

About Atlan

Atlan was founded in 2019 and launched publicly in 2020, and is co-led by Prukalpa Sankar and Varun Banka. Its head office is in Singapore. The company's origin story is that the founding team previously ran data projects for the United Nations, the Gates Foundation and the Indian government, and kept losing context whenever data moved between teams and tools. It has raised more than $200m, including a $105m Series C in 2024 led by GIC and Meritech Capital. The product is proprietary, with no open-source edition.
